The Proqual Level 2 Award in Mental Health First Aid is a vocational course which teaches candidates how to recognise the signs of poor mental health, create a mental health policy and contribute to your organisation's mental health risk assessments

As a vocational course, learners do not have to spend any time in the classroom while studying. Instead, they progress by completing a workbook, with the support of their assessor.

The Level 2 Award in Mental Health First Aid takes approximately 20 hours to study, including 15 guided learning hours and 5 hours of additional personal learning time.

The Proqual Level 2 Award consists of three total units: 

  • Understand what is meant by mental health 

  • Understand common mental health conditions 

  • Understand the role of the mental health first aider

The Proqual Level 2 Award has learning outcomes for each of its units.  

Upon completing the course, learners will: 

Understand what is meant by mental health 

  • Identify what is meant by the terms mental health and well being 

  • Describe the aims of mental health first aid 

  • Describe how the action of others can negatively affect individuals with a mental health condition  

  • Explain the mental health continuum 

Understand common mental health conditions 

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of the following:

  •  Depression  

  • Substance abuse  

  • Addiction  

  • Anxiety disorders including phobias  

  • Post traumatic stress disorder  

  • Self-harm  

  • Suicide  

  • Eating disorders  

  • Personality disorder  

  • Psychotic disorders 

  • Identify the risk factor of the following: 

  • Depression  

  • Substance abuse  

  • Addiction  

  • Anxiety disorders including phobias  

  • Post traumatic stress disorder  

  • Self-harm  

  • Suicide  

  • Eating disorders  

  • Personality disorder  

  • Psychotic disorders 

Understand the role of the mental health first aider 

  • Describe the skills required by a mental health first aider 

  • Identify common treatments and/or interventions used for managing mental ill health 

  • Describe how the mental health first aide con support individuals showing signs or symptoms of mental health disorders or problems 

  • Identify sources of reliable information, support and guidance for mental health first aiders 

Candidates will be required to demonstrate their knowledge through a range of assessment methods, including evidence from their day to day work (submitting photos, reports, emails etc.), a discussion with their assessor about the principles of Mental Health First Aid, and some written Q&As.
